Vesuvianite, or Idocrase, is a naturally occuring mineral originally found on the volcano, Mt Vesuvius. It has been noted that some of its structure is similar to that of grossularite, a garnet, which is an isometric mineral. Normally green, vesuvianite also occurs in brown, yellow, blue and/or purple.
Vesuvianite forms as a result of contact metamorphism on impure limestones and is mined in Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Canada, and parts of the USA. |
