Turquoise Nugget Beads with Faceted Whiskey Quartz Nugget Pendant Necklace

Turquoise Gemstone Information

Turquoise is a naturally occuring gemstone found in a range of hues from sky blue to grey-green and at times occuring with brownish black veining or "matrix".  It is mostly found in places where there is a high concentration of copper in the soil.  Being one of the first gemstones ever mined, it has been used in jewelry as far back as 6000BC by the Egyptians to be later joined by craftsmen of Persian, Asian, Mexican and Native American decent.

Turquoise is considerably softer than quartz with a MOH's hardness of 6.   Being relatively soft, turquoise is a sensitive stone which requires treatments to help hold the color.  Even high-quality stones today are treated with wax and subsequently hardened to make the gemstone more resistant.  Protect Turquoise from heat, cosmetics, and bright light; clean occasionally with a soft cloth.

The traditional birthstone of December, turquoise has always been worn as a natural protection against the powers of darkness.
