Tourmaline

pink tourmaline briolettes and pearl beaded necklace

Tourmaline Gemstone Information

Tourmaline is a natural gemstone that occurs in so many colors, it's known as the "gemstone of the rainbow".  From red to green and blue to yellow, there are bi-color tourmalines, catseye tourmalines, and even color-changing tourmalines (ones that change color depending upon the light source).  In fact, no two tourmalines are exactly alike.

Popular colors include Rubellite (reddish pink), Green Tourmaline, Paraiba Tourmaline (intense blue to blue-green discovered in 1987 in Paraiba, Brazil), and the most rare "Canary Tourmaline" (bright yellow). The "watermelon slice" is as the name implies - colored like the fruit with it's pink and green hues.

Tourmalines are found almost all over the world with major deposits in Brazil, Sri Lanka and South and south-west Africa.  This gemstone has excellent wearing qualities, is easy to care for, and has good hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
