Tanzanite is an extraordinary gemstone that occurs in only one place worldwide - Tanzania. It is a blue variety of the gemstone zoisite that is surrounded by a fine hint of purple.
Discovered in 1967, Tanzanite has since become a highly desired gemstone for avid collectors thanks to Tiffany's, the famous jeweler in New York. It has become so popular, that in October 2002 the American Gem Trade Association added tanzanite to the traditional list of birthstones for the month of December. Nearly all tanzanite has been heat treated to generate it's beautiful violet-blue color. Tanzanite is not a particularly hard gamstone, measuring 6.5 to 7 on the MOH's scale, and therefore should always be worn carefully, never placed in an ultrasonic bath, or brought into contact with acids. |
