Spinel is a master of disquise which was at one time mistaken for ruby. Naturally occuring in Madagascar, Tanzania, and Vietnam, it is prized for it's eternal brilliance and spectacular colors. Besides Red, Spinel occurs in Blue, Pink, Orange and many other fancy colors, some which have been given their own names. These include "Almandine Spinel" (a violet variety), "Cobalt Blue Spinel" (colored by cobalt and resembling find sapphires), "Flame Spinel" (orange red variety), "Gahnite" (so named after a chemist, it is the greenish or bluish zinc-rich variety), "Rubicelle" (yellow to orange variety) and "Noble Red Spinel" (the ruby imposter). While recognised in Burma as it's own gem species as early as 1587, in other countries the masquerade continued for hundreds of years. Spinels are intensely colored and durable gemstones that are perfect for all types of jewelry. |
