The Spessartite Garnet was originally named after the site of a find made in Germany. Spessartites had led a quiet existence until several years ago when they were discovered in brilliant orange to red tones in Namibia. The recent availability of this variety has made them much more popular for use in jewelry designs. Under the trade name 'mandarine-garnet', this wonderfully orange garnet became world-famous in no time at all. The mine in Nanibia has not produced any specimens in some time but thankfully another deposit was discovered in Nigeria. Their colour and brilliance are so similar to those of the mandarin garnets from Namibia that only an experienced specialist can discern the subtle differences. |
