Pearls are formed inside the shell of certain mollusks - when an irritant enters the shell, it creates a pearl by sealing off the irritant with layers of nacre. Freshwater Pearls come from shells residing in freshwater lakes and ponds while salt water pearls, ie Akoya pearls, come from pearl oysters living in oceans. The three main types of saltwater pearls are akoya, South Sea and Tahitian but here, at dianabostany.com, we use predominantly freshwater pearls.
The unique luster of pearls depends upon the reflection, refraction, and diffraction of light from the translucent layers. The thinner and more numerous the layers in the pearl, the finer the luster. Pearls are often white or cream, but the color can vary significantly according to the natural color of the nacre in the various species of mollusk used. Thus pearls can also be black, or various pastel shades. In addition, pearls (especially freshwater pearls) can be dyed yellow, green, blue, brown, pink, purple, or black. |
