Labradorite is a naturally occuring gemstone known for it's "shiller" effect - the play of color caused by the interference of light from lattice distortions. Also referred to as "labradorescence" it appears as stunning rainbow colored reflections when light strikes the gem in a particular direction.
Labradorite can be found in orange, yellow, colorless, and red, but it's the dark smoke grey variety that's used most for beaded jewelry and rings. Labradorite was named after the Labrador Peninsula in Canada where it was first discovered in the 18th century. It can also be found in Australia, Madagascar, Russia, Mexico, China, the Scandinavian Peninsula and the United States. |
