Garnet

Garnet - Plum - Briolette Flower Pendant w/Sapphire, Pearl, Peridot

Garnet Gemstone Information

Garnet dates back to the Bronze age - prior to 3000BC. Having long since used in jewelry, it occurs in every shade except blue and can be found all over the world.  Different types of garnet come from different regions.  Almandine, a deep red garnet, is found in Idaho and Arizona while Tsavorite, a green garnet is found in Kenya.  Orange varieties of garnet, such as Mandarin and Spessartite, occur in Africa and Europe respectively.  Other sources of garnet include Latin America, India, Australia, and Asia.

The name garnet comes from the Latin word for seed or grain, "granatus."  This name was given to the red garnet for it's close resemblance of a pomegranate seed; the pomegranate having been referenced in Greek Myth as a gift of love.

Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January.
