Chalcedony is technically microcrystalline quartz - which means that it's crystals are too small to be seen by the naked eye. In addition to the translucent single color variety, like Blue Chalcedony, it comes in many forms from the banded and/or opaque varieties of agates and jaspers. Blue Chalcedony varies from very pale to medium tones and is found in California, Nevada, Africa and Oregon. The most unusual type, and arguably the most valuable, is from Oregon with it's blues having a lavender quality known as "Holly Blue." When shopping for Blue Chalcedony, one should look for color saturation and high translucence. |
