Apatite is a naturally occuring gemstone which at times has been confused with Paraiba Tourmaline, Peridot, and Beryl. Originally discovered in the 30's, it wasn't until Apatite was discovered in Madagascar in 1995 that it became a popular gemstone. Stones from Madagascar exhibit excellent color saturation from neon "Emerald" greens to neon "Paraiba" blues. Other major sources include Brazil, Burma, and Mexico. Apatite is a softer stone registering at 5.0 on the MOH's hardness scale. For this reason it is best reserved for necklaces and earrings and should be handled with care. |
