Amethyst Gemstone Information

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz predominantly found in Brazil.   The birthstone for February, amethyst is available in shades from light pink to deep purple.  "Rose de France" is usually a pale pinkish lavender or lilac shade.  Green Amethyst is achieved by artificially treating the amethyst with heat.

The name Amethyst comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness; the ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.
