Amber is fossil tree resin which can sometimes contain insects and even small vertebrates. Good quality amber is used most often in the creation of jewelry and while not mineralized, it is often classified as a gemstone with the most prized amber being transparent.
Ranging from 30 to 90 million years old, amber occurs in a range of different colors. In addition to the usual yellow-orange that is associated with the color "amber", amber itself can range from a whitish color to a pale lemon yellow, to brown and almost black. Other more uncommon colors include red amber (sometimes known as "cherry amber"), green amber, and even blue amber, which is rare and highly sought after. |
